Common Dental Emergencies
In the event you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, our team provides 24hr emergency dental care to meet your immediate needs.
As soon as you feel discomfort or pain in your teeth, see your emergency dentist right away. Toothaches are not a common occurrence — whatever the problem, it is unlikely to be fixable by resuming normal tooth care or home remedies. The problem can worsen quickly, so make sure you are taking the appropriate steps to protect your teeth and your health.
Broken, Chipped, or Cracked Tooth
A broken, chipped, or cracked tooth is a very serious dental problem that, if left untreated, could cause long-lasting damage to your tooth and the normal functioning of your bite. Structural damage to your jaw that affects your ability to chew is a risk you do not want to take.
The first step you take after breaking, chipping, or cracking a tooth is to rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the affected area. If you can, wrap the remaining tooth fragment in wet gauze or a wet towel and head to the dentist straight away.
Loosened or Knocked Out Tooth
In the event your tooth is knocked loose due to impact or trauma, call your dentist immediately. For a tooth that has been knocked completely out of its socket, carefully insert the lost tooth back in its socket. By holding the crown of the tooth in a clean washcloth during reinsertion, you can protect your tooth and gums from harmful bacteria. Be sure to wash the tooth first if it is dirty, but do not scrub or remove any remaining tissues. If you have tried to reinsert the tooth to no avail, hold the tooth under your tongue and head to our emergency office immediately.
If you have suffered a broken jaw, and there are no signs of significant bleeding, you will need emergency dental care. Once you’ve identified where the jaw was broken, apply ice or a cold compress to the affected area and head straight for the emergency dental office.
Bitten Tongue or Lip
Sometimes we bite off a little more than we intended to. A bitten tongue or lip can be a nasty affair — one that may require professional dental attention if the wound is severe enough. If you’ve suffered a particularly bad bite to the tongue or lip, clean the area with a damp cloth and place a cold compress on the area to reduce swelling. If you can handle it, a good swish of mouthwash can disinfect any lurking bacteria which may otherwise seep into your wound. Keep it iced and head to the emergency dental care office.
